Pointe-au-Père Lighthouse

The Phare de Pointe -au -Père is a lighthouse in Pointe -au -Père ( incorporated today in Rimouski ) in the province of Quebec, Canada. It lies on the southern coast of the estuary of the St. Lawrence River.

The first lighthouse was built in 1859. 1867 was the second lighthouse, a square brick tower, built. The present lighthouse is the third at this point and was completed in 1909. With nearly 33 meters high it is the second tallest lighthouse in eastern Canada. The form of the building is maintained characteristic. The cylindrical shape of the tower to be used outside eight buttresses of concrete. In 1975 the lighthouse was decommissioned and replaced by a fully automatic lighthouse lamp on a nearby steel piers.

In addition to the lighthouse, there was a port facility with rail connection to 1959 and the pilot station for navigation between Rimouski and Québec. The place was formerly known in English as " Father 's Point ".

The lighthouse and surrounding buildings are protected as a historic building. The area and the lighthouse are now open to tourists as part of the Musée de la Mer ( Museum of the Sea ), in addition to the history of the lighthouse and pilot station is also dedicated taken place near sinking of the Empress of Ireland.
