Pol Bury

Pol Bury ( born April 26, 1922 in Haine- Saint- Pierre, Belgium, † September 28, 2005 in Paris) was a Belgian painter and sculptor.

Life

Pol Bury studied 1938/39, at the Académie des Beaux -Arts in Mons. In 1939 he was a founding member of the " Group Rapture ". 1949 to 1951 he was involved in the initiative CoBrA, which was founded in 1948 by the Danish painter Asger Jorn, the Belgian writer Christian Dotremont and the Dutch painter Karel Appel in Paris. After exposure to the art group " Art Abstrait " he turns all of the painting from 1953.

In 1957 he developed the first mobile kinetic sculpture with motor. 1964 represented Pol Bury, who had lived in Paris since 1960, Belgium at the Venice Biennale. Bury drew 1966 to 1968 to New York. In 1970 he took a teaching position at the University of California, Berkeley, and in 1973 he taught at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, which was characterized Pol Bury with an honorary doctorate. Since 1983, Pol Bury was a professor of sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts de Paris ( ENSBA ). He was represented at the documenta III in Kassel in 1964 and also at the documenta 4 in 1968 as an artist.

Pol Bury initially belonged to the surrealist and communist movement of abstraction, first as a painter and later as a sculptor. He was influenced in his first works much of his compatriots Magritte and Ubac. After his retirement in 1953 by the painting he made his mark as one of the most renowned kinetic artist. Pol Bury realized objects that perform extremely slow movements, thus providing the perception to the test. He works his works only as reliefs, representing the movement of serial elements such as disks or pins. The demand and the public interest in contemporary kinetic energy and kinetic art gave birth to his first major objects of monumental sculptures in 1973. Since 1976 he has built numerous wells, always in context and on the basis of basic shapes spheres, cones, cylinders, cubes and bricks.
