The police college in Finland ( Finnish: Poliisiammattikorkeakoulu, Swedish Polisyrkeshögskolan ) is responsible for the training of command and staff for research and development work of the Finnish police.

Management and study

The police university has around 90 employees, of which about 28 are working in the training department and about 32 in the research department.

Formal admission requirement to study at the police college is a testimony of a university, the job as a police officer and completed training with passing the police exam or subcommand police team graduating from the police academy. In both cases, professional experience required are as a police officer for three years. Police officers who already have a university degree may be admitted without the otherwise necessary practice evidence to study.

Mainly Finnish applicants get a place at this particular college the police. Each year about 25 students are accommodated in the single degree course for the police command exam ( 180 ECTS credits ).

Studying at the police college is divided into two parts: the A- part with 126 credit points ( three semesters ) is used as a qualification for office with the official title " komisario " or " rikoskomisario " ( Police Commissioner or Commissioner criminal investigation ). After this A- course the students go back to their posts. The B section with 54 credit points available only to police officers who hold office as Police Commissioner already or Polizeihauptmeister ( ylikonstaapeli ) and serve as a channel.

The study of the B- part is done in addition to the normal service activity as a police officer. The study concluded with the police command exam after passing the B section sets the stage for the most conductive functional points of the Finnish police. For some of the highest service positions, however, a university degree ( ylempi korkeakoulututkinto ) is provided with master exam, the " safety management " of Economic and Administrative Sciences Faculty of the University of Tampere offered in the master's program.

Studying at the police college is only open to officials in the police service. Accordingly, the student officers receive their salary, plus a price per diems, and otherwise free therapeutic care, accommodation and meals.

History and Future

The first predecessor of the police college was the " Police Academy of the State", which was founded in 1918. This Police Academy of the State was responsible for the sub-command and command training of all Finnish police. The team training was, however, a task of policing the City of Helsinki and some other police forces. 1961 from the Police Academy of the State Police Department, which carried out the only institution police training for the whole of Finland. In the same year, the Police Department received new facilities in Otaniemi, Espoo. In 1974, the team was moved to the police training school in Tampere. After that, the police institute focused on the sub-command and command training.

As was the Finnish higher education system in 1998 has been altered, from the police institute a police college and from the police students were students. With this marked change in police training, the responsibility for the subcommand training was transferred alone the police academy.
