Polish presidential election, 1922 (special)

The second presidential election in Poland took place on 20 December 1922 in Warsaw, only eleven days after the first presidential election. The National Assembly Stanisław Wojciechowski has elected President of the Republic of Poland.

Background

The elected on December 9, 1922 President Gabriel Narutowicz was assassinated on 16 December after a smear campaign of the nationalist press of the fanatics Eligiusz Neviadomski. Marshal of the Sejm Maciej Rataj took over in accordance with the " Constitution March " on an interim basis the official duties of head of state and called for Wednesday, 20 December 1922, the new elections.

The following candidates were proposed by the political groups in the National Assembly for election:

  • Kazimierz Morawski - historian and classical scholar, Chairman of the Polish Academy of scholarship, former member of the Austrian provincial parliament (1907-1918), former Rector of the University of Krakow, proposed by the union of the nationalist and Christian Democratic parties
  • Stanisław Wojciechowski - Pressure translator, cooperative members, co-founder and until 1905 a member of the Polish Socialist Party, former Minister of the Interior ( 1919-1920 ), proposed by the centric to moderate right Polish Peasant Party " Piast ".

The vote

Under the chairmanship of Sejmmarschalls Maciej Rataj found the secret ballot in the third session of the National Assembly rather than by ballot throw-in.
