The Polski Owczarek Podhalanski, ( Tatra Sheepdog ), also Tatra Dog Tatra Shepherd Dog and Podhalaner, is recognized by the FCI Polish breed (FCI Group 1, Section 1, Standard No. 252).

Origin and History

This sheepdog is a close relative of the Kuvasz and Cuvac and probably also related to the other great mountain herding dogs of Europe, such as the Bergamasco Sheepdog. He is descended from the great Asian Danes who came to Europe about 1,000 years ago.

Description

Up to 70 -cm and 60 kg, white dog with an impressive ruff and bushy tail. The hair is long, weatherproof, well developed undercoat, ears set high, medium size, triangular in shape.

The Podhalaner has a self-cleaning sheet, ie, when it is dry, the dirt falls off easily. Even otherwise, the coat is not prone to matting and must be brushed only once a week.

Use

The main use of the Tatra dogs occurs as guard dogs, hence the typical herd protection features, which means that they can defend against predators, the herds independently as the wolf. The Tatra dog fights wolves not active, but is to injure or even kill a wolf quite capable.

In Poland, Tatra dogs are also often kept as farm dogs.

Education is not easy and the breed has grown only 3 years. It can be used after appropriate education as a companion dog because of their high threshold is also training to become a therapy dog ​​possible. As a family dog ​​, it is also very suitable.

Very popular is the race in the Netherlands, in Germany there are about 250 purebred dogs of this breed.

Legal

The Tatra Sheepdog stands in the Swiss canton of Ticino on the breed list of potentially dangerous dogs, the attitude is there a permit.
