Polly Holliday

Polly Dean Holliday ( born July 2, 1937 in Jasper, Alabama ) is an American actress.

Life and career

Holliday, was born in Jasper, Alabama, the daughter of Velma Mabell and Ernest Sillivan Holliday, a truck driver. Prior to her acting career Holliday worked in her native Alabama and Florida as a piano teacher. Her acting work she began at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, where she spent 10 years.

Large notoriety she gained through the role of Florence Jean Castleberry aka Flo, which she played in the sitcom Alice. The popularity of the character led to an own spin -off show of the same name, in which Polly Holliday again in the title role of Flo played. Also in various films she was seen. So she looked in The Untouchables, Gremlins - Little Monsters, Mrs. Doubtfire - The prickly nanny and The Parent Trap alone.

In 1973 she moved to New York and was also active as Thaeterdarstellerin. She played in Alice Childresss piece wedding band in the Public Theatre and the production Braodway All Over Town with. While working there, she became friends with the famous actor Dustin Hoffman, with which in 1976 worked on the film All the President's Men.

Also in TV series she starred such as Golden Girls, in which she represented Rose Nylund blind sister Lily. In the sitcom Listen, Home Improvement, she played the role of Jill's mother. For her performance in the Broadway show The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1990, she was nominated for a Tony Award.
