Polycarp Pengo

Polycarp Cardinal Pengo (* August 5, 1944 in Mwazye, Tanzania) is Archbishop of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Life

Pengo attended from 1959 to 1964 the secondary school at Minoritenkolleg in Kaengesa. In 1965 he entered the seminary of Kipalalpala and spent three years studying philosophy ( in 1965-1967 ) and four years of Catholic Theology (from 1968-1971 ).

On June 20, 1971 Pengo was ordained a priest in the diocese of Sumbawanga. The following two years, from June 1971 to July 1973, he served as secretary to the bishop.

From 1973 to 1977 he studied moral theology at the Pontifical Lateran University ( Academy of St. Alphonsus ) and was awarded his doctorate. After his studies, he returned to Tanzania in 1977 and taught moral theology at the Seminary of Kipalalpala. Subsequently, he was appointed rector of the major seminary of Segerea. This position had Pengo held from 1978 to 1983.

On November 11, 1983 Pengo was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of Nachingwea. The Episcopal ordination by the Pope took place on Epiphany (6 January ) 1984 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Pengo entered the office of bishop at February 19, 1984.

On October 17, 1986, he was appointed bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Masasi Tunduru, where he was installed on 12 February 1987.

Pengo occurred on 22 July 1992 the successor of Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, after he had been there already appointed on 22 January 1990 to Koadjutorerzbischof.

In the consistory of February 21, 1998, Pope John Paul II took him a cardinal priest with the titular church of Nostra Signora de La Salette on the College of Cardinals.

He is President of SECAM ( Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar ).
