Polyp (medicine)

Polyps are macroscopically visible, usually pedunculated protrusions of the mucosa (mucous membrane ). Your descriptive name derives from the polyps of Cnidaria ago (Greek polypous = " Vielfüßer "), which describe a pedunculated stage in their individual development.

Descriptive

The medical word polyp is purely descriptive (eg Nasenschleimhautpolyp - flammable; Colonic polyp - neoplastic ) and neither says anything about the etiology something about the dignity of, that is, a neoplastic polyp can be both benign and malignant. The differentiation can only be made by histological ablation.

Diseases

About the endoscopic removal of colonic polyps with a flexible instrument was first reported at the University of Erlangen on 13 March 1971 by P. Deyhle. Thus the basis for screening colonoscopy was laid in Germany. At the same time this was the beginning of the operative endoscopy.
