Pomatias

Beautiful land snail ( Pomatias elegans)

Pomatias is a genus in the country live snails from the family of land snails ( Pomatiidae ) in the order of Sorbeoconcha. The oldest representative of the genus are from the Oligocene.

Features

The conically - shaped housing of the representatives of the genus Pomatias be up to 25 mm high and wide to 17 mm. The males are usually smaller, on average, the housings are provided slightly slimmer and with a narrower mouth. The ratio of height to width is slightly different for the species of the genus. You have 4 to 6 strongly curved turns which are offset from each other by a deep suture, and a rather pointed Gehäuseapex. Usually the spiral lines are very clearly designed and powerful, the somewhat crooked radial lines can also be very strong and, together with the spiral lines retikulates a pattern. The radial lines can be also clearly weaker than the spiral lines. The mouth is round to ovoid wrong with a more or less angularly tapered upper end. The mouth edge is only slightly expanded, easy and not thickened. The body whorl is rounded down and closely umbilicate.

The housings are usually yellowish brown to reddish brown, often with a white flame pattern. The substantially flat operculum is calcified, has some tighter inner windings and a large body whorl and a slight tip or corner that fits into the angled upper end of the casing mouth. The nucleus is slightly eccentrically displaced towards the spindle edge.

The animal is relatively large, the soft body gray - brown with long tentacles. The animals are dioecious.

Geographical distribution

The species are mainly found in the wider area of the Mediterranean region. In the north, the range extends to the south of England, Southern Ireland and Denmark. In Central Europe, the deposits are very scattered and limited to some heat- favored areas. In the east it extends into the northern Caucasus, in the south to North Africa. Another occurrence is located in the Canary Islands.

Taxonomy

The taxon was proposed in 1789 by Samuel valid Emanuel Studer in William Coxe. The name derives from the Ancient Greek ὁ πωματίας from what is interpreted as " a worm, which closes her little house in winter with a lid ." Pomatias Studer in Coxe, 1789 is the type genus of the family Pomatiidae / Pomatiasidae. The trunk is Pomati, the correct name is therefore Pomatiidae. The genus name has long been in the sense of Hartmann, 1821 needed. This taxon is a synonym of Cochlostoma Jan, 1830. Wilhelm Kobelt Only limited the term to the original type one, or divided the other species in the genus Cochlostoma from. Currently, nine to ten extant and 25 extinct species have been described. Russian authors divide the genus into two subgenera, Pomatias ( Pomatias ) and Pomatias ( Eichwaldipoma ) Starobogatov & Anistratenko, 1991:
