Pomerol AOC

Pomerol is a wine region in the Bordeaux region and is famous for high-quality red wines.

It is an AOC area in front of the eastern gates of the small town of Libourne, about 30 km north-east of Bordeaux. The vineyards are approved in the municipal area of Pomerol as well as in the northeastern part of Libourne. In the north it separates the river from the adjacent wine region Barbanne Lalande -de- Pomerol.

The wines Pomerol point of all wines in the Bordeaux region for the largest proportion (up to 100 percent) on Merlot. About 80 percent of the 800 hectares under surface consists of Merlot plantings. The rest is mostly planted with Cabernet Franc. Pomerol finest wines usually arise at the highest points of the plateau, where the soil consists mainly of gravel with interlayers of clay.

East of Pomerol, the wine-growing region of Saint- Émilion connects. Both areas together form the core of the Bordeaux " right bank ", in relation to wine, with the commonality of the use of high Merlot proportions in the blends. Thus they are usually a little earlier accessible and gentler than the wines from the Medoc.

History

During the Hundred Years' War that has already existed in Roman times viticulture was completely abandoned and only re- created in the 15th and 16th centuries. During this time, Pomerol is only valid as a satellite of Saint- Émilion. Only at the beginning of the 20th century, the international trade world is aware of the wines. This fact is due to the fact that there is no classification for this area. Moreover, it is at the Châteaux usually simple farmhouses with only a few hectares of vines. Only Château de Sales has over 47 hectares of vineyards on both an acceptable size as well as a stately home.
