Pomp and Circumstance Marches

The Pomp and Circumstance Marches, Op 39 are a series of five marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar.

The title "Pomp and Circumstance "

The title of the series comes from the third act of Shakespeare's Othello:

With pomp and circumstance So meant pomp and armor of a glorious war.

Formation

The individual marches made ​​in the period 1901-1930 and were also each premiered shortly after their formation.

Elgar (in g minor) left sketches for a sixth march, which were completed in 2006 by Anthony Payne into a complete piece; It was premiered at the London Proms on August 2 of that year.

Effect

Its popularity owes "Pomp and Circumstance " especially the first two marches. The first march, the Edward VII wished for his coronation, was backed by the words " Land of Hope and Glory" and became almost as popular as the official national anthem God Save the Queen and the regional anthem of England.
