Ponta Delgada is a comune ( Freguesia ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira, in a circle ( concelho ) of São Vicente. The municipality has an area of 9.4 km ² and 1359 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

After the re- discovery of the island by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1419 began the initial colonization of the island by the Portuguese. In 1552 Ponta Delgada was raised to the independent community.

Literary References

The writer, poet and journalist Horácio Bento de Gouveia (1901-1983) was born here. In his birth house is furnished with the Casa Museu Horácio Bento de Gouveia, a museum dedicated to him.

The writer Agustina Bessa - Luís (* 1922) wrote the gambling here novel A Corte do Norte (English about: The stately courtyard of the North). He was successfully filmed by João Botelho 2009.
