The Nodding Pincushion Pickerel Weed ( Pontederia cordata ) is a plant of the genus Hecht herbs ( Pontederia ) in the family of water hyacinth plants ( Pontederiaceae ).

Features

The Nodding Pincushion Pickerel weed is a perennial aquatic plant, which reaches stature heights from 30 to 100cm. It forms a rhizome than Überdauerungsorgan. The lower leaves are sessile and linear, the upper ones are long-petiolate, their lamina is lanceolate to heart - arrow-shaped and measure 6 to 22 × 7 to 12 inches. The flowers are two-lipped, funnel-shaped and only one day open. The corolla lobes are colored blue to blue-violet, verkehrteilanzettlich and 5 to 8 mm long, the upper have a bilobed yellow spot on. The fruits are single-seeded indehiscent fruits, which are included in the hardened Perigonröhre.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

Occurrence

The distribution area extends from temperate warm East America Southeast Canada to Minnesota, Florida and Texas, Mexico and Central and South America. Here the plant is in the shore reeds of ponds and lakes to form in water depths of 30 centimeters.

Use

The Nodding Pincushion Hecht herb is used as an ornamental plant dispersed for the edges of park and garden ponds. She's probably at least since 1579 in culture.
