Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies

The Pontifical Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies ( Italian: Pontifical Institute of Studies Arabi e d' Islamistica PISAI ) is a Catholic University of canon law with its headquarters in Rome and Cairo.

History

The Institute was founded in 1926 on the initiative of the Society of Missionaries of Africa ( White Fathers ) by the Holy See. It initially had its headquarters in Tunis and was moved to Rome in 1956. In 1960 there was a Pontifical Institute by Pope Paul VI. recognized. Since 1997, the Dar - Comboni Center for Arab Studies in Cairo belongs to PISAI.

Institute

The Institute has as objective to enable a qualified preparation of Christians for the debate and interfaith dialogue with Islam.

About 25 professors from various Christian denominations and from the Islamic tradition taught about 1300 students in English, French and Arabic. The degree in Arabic and Islamic studies is possible with a diploma, licentiate and doctorate. Compulsory subject all students is to learn the Arabic language, which provides access to the basic texts of Islam. Doctoral studies are available in Arabic and Islamic Studies.

Grand Chancellor is Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski, Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education; Chancellor Richard Baawobr MAFR, Superior General of the White Fathers.

The PISAI is supported by the Papal Foundation " Centesimus Annus Pro Pontifice ( CAPP ) ."
