Nuchequula nuchalis

The pony fish ( Leiognathidae ) is a family of related bass fish that are represented in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean. Equulites is klunzingeri migrated through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea. One finds pony fish mostly in shallow coastal waters and in the intertidal zone. Some species are also in the fresh water.

Features

Pony fish depending on the type five to 28 inches long. Your body is flattened laterally, covered by small scales, the lower part of the body is very slimy. The head is normally without scales and shows Knochenwülste on the top. The mouth is small and far vorstreckbar ( protractil ). The palatine bone is toothless. An eye gill gland ( pseudobranch ) is missing. The number of Branchiostegalstrahlen is four to five, the number of vertebrae in 22 to 24 have all kinds of pony fish light organs along the esophagus.

They have a single continuous dorsal fin. The hard rays of dorsal and anal fin can be fixed by a locking mechanism. The bases of dorsal and anal fins are scaly.

Fins formula: Dorsal VIII-IX/14-16, Anal III/14.

Pony fish feed on small, bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
