Pope Eleuterus

Eleutherus or Eleutherius (* probably in Nicopolis, Greece, † May 24 189, buried on the Vatican Hill ) was of about 175-189 Bishop of Rome.

This ends the Greeks earliest list of the bishops of Rome of Irenaeus of Lyon. References to him are also found in Eusebius of Caesarea and other documents of the time. He fought, like its predecessors, with Montanism. After giving his contemporary Hegesippus Eleutherus to have been a deacon during the tenure of the Roman bishop Anicetus.

The Liber Pontificalis reports from the beginning of the 6th century, he had relations with the British king Lucius, who harbored a desire to convert to Christianity. This legend - Roman, not of British origin - is a mystery to historians and apparently has no historical foundation.

The Holy Remembrance of Eleutherius is May 26 His name means: the free (Greek )
