Pope Eusebius

Eusebius (Greek: the God-fearing; † August 17 309 in Sicily ) was bishop of Rome for a short time.

According to the Liberian Catalogue, he was Pope from April 18 to August 17 309 Bishop of Rome. The I. Marcellus begun dispute over the resumption of Christians who had fallen during the persecution of Diocletian, continued under him. Eusebius argued for a return of apostates after a season of penance. The dispute over resulted in unrest and violence. Emperor Maxentius banished him and his opponent Heraclius to Sicily, where Eusebius died. His body was probably brought in 311 to Rome and buried in the Catacombs of St. Callistus. After his death the bishopric had been vacant for a while.

Some sources put his death and according to his office one years later. Thus, he would have been Bishop of Rome in 310 and died in this year.

He is revered as a martyr and saint. His feast day is August 17 (previously September 26 ).
