Popovice (Uherské Hradiště District)

Popovice ( German Popowitz, formerly Poppowitz ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It is located six kilometers south-east of Uherské Hradiště and belongs to Okres Uherské Hradiště.

Geography

Popovice is located on the right side above the valley of Olšava. The village is situated in the highlands hill country belonging to Vizovická Prakšická pahorkatina on the edge of the Natural Park. To the west the valley of the brook Olšovec lies with the ponds Popovické rybníky. North-east rises the Lovisko ( 349 m ) east of the Milonín (323 m), in the southeastern Myšince (352 m ) south of the Kamenný (348 m) and Hluboček (351 m ) and north-west the Rovnina (336 m). South of the village runs in the valley of Olšava the railway line Brno- Vlárský průsmyk, behind the European route 50/Staatsstraße I/50 Brno to Trencin.

Neighboring towns are Javorovec and Mistřice in the north, and Nedachlebice Prakšice in the northeast, Hradčovice in the east, in the southeast Veletiny, Podolí in the south, and Míkovice Vésky the southwest, Sady in the west and Mařatice, Rybárny and Jarošov in the northwest.

History

The first written mention of Horni Popovice took place in 1220 in the wake of the gift of the village by Otakar I Přemysl to the Cistercian Order. 1228 the village was listed along with Dolni Popovice in the founding document of the monastery Velehrad as monastic possession. Supposedly Ulrich III. of Spanheim have paid in 1247 to the monastery chapel of the Virgin Mary in Popovice on the mountain at Kunovice, this is now regarded as incorrect, since already belonged to the monastery at the time the goods. After the destruction of the monastery by the Hussites Burian took possession of the goods Vlčnov. 1437 received Burian Popovice as a deposit. 1467 pledged the monastery villages Podolí Popovice to 20 years at the city Hradiště. Finally, the monastery Popovice sold on June 28, 1533 the town. 1669 the entire village was burned down during the invasion of Hungary. For further incursions Hungarian troops Popovice 1683 was partially plugged again on fire. The oldest town seal dates from the year 1698. 1708 was in Popovice a trivial school established previously been taught in Derfle. In the mid-18th century, the village had about 500 inhabitants. 1828 originated in Popovice a schoolhouse. Until the mid-19th century Popovice was always to large and part Uherské Hradiště submissive.

After the abolition of patrimonial formed Popovice / Poppowitz 1850 a municipality in the district of Hungarian Hradisch. While the German war in 1866 Prussian troops dragged a cholera, the consequences of which 31 residents died. 1888 Wlarabahn was built and furnished in Popovice a stop. Until the establishment of the parish in 1913 was Popovice gepfarrt after Derfle. Since that time Popovice is also vicarage for Podolí. 1920 commercial vocational school was established in Popovice. The local distillery was nationalized in 1948.
