Porphyridium cruentum

The purple - red algae ( Porphyridium cruentum ) is a species of the tribe of the red algae ( Rhodophyta ).

Description

It makes black -red to crimson, to large plate and membranous - slimy gelatinous stock. The individual cells are 7-12 microns in size, globose to polygonal and brown-red to red. The nucleus is located laterally adjacent to the central pyrenoid. The chloroplasts have morning star -like rays, which are wider at the cell wall. As assimilates carbohydrates ( Florideenstärke ) are formed. The chloroplasts are colored red by carotenoids and phycoerythrin.

Occurrence

Porphyridium cruentum can be found year-round in shady, damp places near water, at the outside corners and at the base of old trees. It occurs frequently.

Use

P. cruentum one of the few already commercially used Mikroalgespezies. Extracts of most produced in high quality microalgae photobioreactors of this type are used for its skin protecting properties in algae cosmetics.
