History

The fishing was since the beginning of main industry of the city, but had no harbor, so that the fishermen had to drag their boats by winches on land. A design from the 1880s, which provided a double port connected by channels between the Skagerrak and Kattegat was discarded. Under pressure from the fishermen, a new proposal was drafted in 1888, which formed the basis of a 1903 law passed over the construction of a port.

The tender was the company Gunnarson & Son og Elzelingen which estimated the height of the construction costs to 1,430,238 crowns, decide in January 1904 for themselves. After three and a half years of construction, the Danish King Frederick VIII on November 19 opened in 1907, the new port. At the same time the seat of the harbor master, " fish store " ( Fiskepakhusene ) and by the Danish architect Hack Kampmann ( 1856-1920 ) designed customs buildings were erected.

Enhancements and expansion of the port

A port expansion seemed inevitable, and so in 1937 a new harbor basin, and in 1938 a fish auction hall were completed in the East. A 1943 expansion decision in the West was delayed because of the German occupation of Denmark in World War II and was commissioned in 1952 to attack. After completion, among other things, a new basin for trawlers was Skagen Havn as modern fishing port in the country.

In the 1960s, the fishery was booming and the port had more than 400 fishing boats. The area to the east was a result, from 1964 to 1979 for DKK 35 million extended by 120 hectares of land and 14 acres of water. This was followed by depression measures in Vesthavn 1985 and 1991 and in Østhavn 1993.

Since the sale of the port to the Skagen municipality in 2001 Skagen Havn is operated as local self-government harbor, which is led by a seven-member board of directors. After a local government reform in Denmark in 2007, he went into the possession of Frederikshavn Kommune on.
