Porta Romana (Milan)

The Porta Romana is one of the surviving city gates of the Spanish walled city of Milan.

It stands today in the center of Piazza Medaglie d'Oro. A Porta Romna already existed in the Middle Ages. Today's Gate was built in 1596 on the occasion of the entry of Margaret of Austria, the bride of Philip III of Spain and remained for about two centuries the only monumental entrance to the city. Here was a focal point of military entanglements concerned the city, but here was also the site of other festive collection ceremonies.
