Porta Venezia

Porta Venezia ( Porta Orientale until 1860 or Porta Renza ) is one of the historic gates in the city walls of Milan. It was remodeled in the 19th century monumental.

Even the Habsburg government in the late 18th century had begun to reshape the Milan city walls in terms of a recreation area. Between 1783 and 1786, the local government created the " Giardini pubblici " in Porta Orientale. The wall wreath used in the 19th century already mainly the purpose of the collection of municipal excise duty ( dazio Comunale ). A project of the dominant Milanese architect Giuseppe Piermarini the classical transformation of the gate in 1782 initially remained unfulfilled. His pupil Luigi Cagnola created in 1806 initially a temporary triumphal arch for the collection of the viceroy Eugène de Beauharnais. In 1825, for the collection of Emperor Francis I and his wife, the work was resumed. The serving as a (tax) office line side buildings were completed in 1827 and 1828. They are creations of the architect Rodolfo Vantini. In 1831, the statues and reliefs were finally mounted.

Porta Orientale was also the name of one of the six historic districts of Milan.
