Portein

Portein (Romansh: Purtagn ) was a municipality in the district Thusis, District Hinterrhein the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. Portein lies at Heinz Berg, the Southeast exposed western boundary of the Domleschg.

On 1 January 2010 the municipalities Cazis, Portein, Prec, Sarn and Tartar merged to form the new municipality Cazis.

Description: silver (white) is an upright, red reinforced, black bear, a golden ( yellow ) tree trunk supporting. The tree trunk supporting bear is the attribute of Saint Gallus (Holy ), the patron of the reformed church.

Demographics

Portein always had a small population. The peak was reached in 1850 with 65, and the lowest in 1980 with 19 people. By December 31, 2001, the municipality Portein with 22 inhabitants, the smallest municipality in Switzerland. At year-end 2004, the congregation had 24 inhabitants, making it along with Martisberg still the second smallest municipality in Switzerland.

Languages

Originally there was talk in the community Sutselvisch, a Grison Romanesque dialect. Already in the 19th century began the decline of the Roman. 1870, the proportion had dropped to 50 % in 1888 to 45% ( 21 of 47 inhabitants), 1910 to 20% ( 6 of 30 residents ). Until the Second World War, the language situation remained stable. Since 1990 there is no more Romansh in the community.

Origin and nationality

From the end of 2005, 21 residents were 18 ( = 85.71 %), Swiss nationals.
