Portland Buckaroos

The Portland Buckaroos were an American ice hockey franchise in the Western Hockey League from Portland, Oregon.

History

The New Westminster Royals of the Western Hockey League presented a 1959 game operation. Subsequently, the franchise was after a year of inactivity on the 1960/61 season to Portland, Oregon, relocated and renamed Portland Buckaroos. The name was chosen on the basis of an eponymous team that took part in 1928-1941 in the game operation of the Pacific Coast Hockey League. In the WHL, the Buckaroos played until the dissolution of the League in 1974. During the years 1961, 1965 and 1971 they won the Lester Patrick Cup, respectively, the champion of the WHL.

The season 1974/75 spent the Portland Buckaroos in the Amateur League Western International Hockey League. The 1975/76 season they spent also in the amateur field in the North West Hockey League, the season, however, was not even played to the end. Then launched Portland Buckaroos a game operation. The gap in the city was filled for season 1976 /77 by the Portland Winter Hawks, who play since then in the top junior Western Hockey League.
