History

The oldest local finds date back to 150 million years, including dinosaur bones and petrified turtle. Excavations and finds evidence of a settlement by humans since the Paleolithic, through the Neolithic and the Chalcolithic period through until the arrival of the Romans v. in the 2nd century AD This called it Portus Mollis and shipped from here, on the then navigable Lena, in particular raw materials from the nearby quarries and iron mines of Alqueidão da Serra.

The present town developed around the fortress, the first king of Portugal, D.Afonso Henriques in 1140 and again in 1148 conquered. He handed it to the knight Fuas Roupinho, who first successfully defended against a re- conquest by the Moors. 1182 the place, including the castle was destroyed by the troops of King Gamir of Mérida before Fuas Roupinho regained control over it. Sancho I was newly built in 1200, which was renewed and expanded in 1450 by the Count of Ourém the castle.

Culture and sights

Among the monuments of the district include, inter alia, historic public buildings, a variety of religious buildings, the castle, some Roman and other bridges, Roman road sections, and the characteristic Arco da Memória (German: Memorial Arch ), a built in the 16th century stone gate to distinguish two administrative regions (so-called Couto ). Also, the historical center of Porto de Mos as a whole is a listed building.

The Gruta dos Moinhos Velhos is discovered to date 8,000 meters long, the largest known cave in Portugal, and is also known as Grutas de Mira Daire, according to their location in the municipality of Mira de Aire.

The Natural Park of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros that was established in 1979 and lies partly in the district of Porto de Mos. Miradouros ( viewpoints ) and thematic trails (eg the prehistoric theme park Jardim Jurássico ) are created. Even a donkey reserve is established here, among others, with opportunities to donkey rides.

In the community calvaria de Cima is a visitor center at the Campo Militar de S. Jorge is set up to commemorate the decisive for the Portuguese independence battle of Aljubarrota, which took place here on August 14, 1385.
