Porvoo
Porvoo [ pɔrvɔ ː ] (Swedish Porvoo [ bɔrgo ː ] ) is a town and episcopal see the Gulf of Finland to the south of Finland. It is 654.78 km ², of which 10.22 km ² water surfaces. Porvoo is a bilingual, 64 percent of the population speak Finnish, 33 percent are Swedish-speaking.
History
Porvoo, located at the old King Street, was an important trading center in the 13th century. The city received in 1346 by the Swedish king Magnus Erikkson municipal rights and is therefore to Turku ( Sister " Åbo " ) is the second oldest city in Finland. As 1550 Helsinki ( Sister " Helsingfors ") was established, Gustav Vasa ordered the citizens of the move there. The following decline continued but only to 1579, when the city privileges were renewed in that year. 1708 destroyed the town the Russians. 1809 coincided with the whole of Finland to Russia. As of March 28, 1809 held Tsar Alexander I in Porvoo Finland's first Reichstag meeting of the newly formed Russian Grand Duchy of Finland from where the Finnish state religion and the rights of the Reichstag were announced. In the 19th century Porvoo was the home to many Finnish poet and artist.
Since 1923, Porvoo Porvoo bishop of the diocese, which includes the Swedish-speaking municipalities of Finland and the German Evangelical Lutheran church in Helsinki. In the city in 1992, the Porvoo Communion, a non-institutional consortium of twelve European Churches Anglican and Lutheran denomination founded.

Attractions
The medieval acting, colorful wooden houses and narrow streets of the picturesque old town ( under monument protection) are largely emerged after the great fire of 1760. The former town hall from 1764 houses a museum. Charming are the rust-red salt storage (18th century ) on the banks of the river Porvoonjoki. The Cathedral of Porvoo with its gabled red brick is the landmark of the city. It was completed in the mid 15th century, is in parts but on the back around 1410. In 2006, the cathedral was destroyed by a devastating fire in part. In Porvoo Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, to whose memory gives the city since 1987, the Runeberg Prize lived. In his house is a museum. Similarly, the sculptor Ville Vallgren worked in Porvoo.
Porvoo is the museum railway Porvoon Museorautatie that maintains historic vehicles of the Finnish State Railways VR - Yhtymä.

Description of coat of arms: In a blue shield open to the left silver fire steel. The fire steel or flint in the form of the letter C is first letter of castellum (Latin for Porvoo ). This coat of arms can be traced back to 1423.

Trivia
Parts of the American thriller The Jackal 1997 were included in Porvoo. The old town hall of the city appears in the film as " Hotelli Porvoo " (Eng.: Hotel Porvoo ).
