Post tenebras lux

Post tenebras lux is a Latin phrase and is translated as light after darkness. In the Vulgate version of the book of Job 17:12 Post tenebras is lucem spero ( " After darkness I hope for light ").

The phrase was used as the motto of the Calvinists, and later as the motto of the whole Reformation, then also the home town of John Calvin, the Swiss city of Geneva, and today is also the motto of the resultant from the city-state of Geneva canton Geneva ( see flag and coat of arms of the canton and the City of Geneva ). The meaning of the saying of the Calvinist movement is underlined by the fact that it is engraved on the Wall of the Reformation in Geneva and in the Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek, South Africa. It is also found as a remnant of a church in the Window " Post Tenebras Lux " in Les Baux in France.

Post tenebras lux was formerly also the motto of Chile, before he was replaced by Spanish Por la razón o la fuerza ( By Reason or by strength ).
