Post-transcriptional modification

Under post-transcriptional modification or post-transcriptional modification of all modifications of the mRNA are combined or modified after transcription. Examples are capping, polyadenylation and splicing.

By these modifications, on the one hand the stability of the RNA is increased, the mRNA for the transport from the nucleus, as well as treated to prevent degradation by exonucleases through the nuclear pore to the cytoplasm; and other non- coding regions of RNA, called introns excised or different ( by alternative splicing ) variants related proteins may be possible.

Posttranscriptional modifications are detectable only in eukaryotes because transcription is spatially separated here from the translation. In prokaryotes, there is, however, for the simultaneous translation of the still emerging in the transcription of mRNA. Further occur no introns.
