PostScript Printer Description

PPD stands for PostScript Printer Description ( for German PostScript Printer Description ). This is a text file in which the special properties of a PostScript printer are described. This allows the printing routines of the operating system or the printed program, the available resolutions, screening methods, paper sizes, paper trays, built-in fonts into account, etc., and offer to the user if a selection, even though the same printer driver is used for all PostScript printers.

When you install the most current operating systems in addition to a PostScript printer driver, a number of PPDs for the most popular printer models will be installed.
