Peacock stingrays ( Potamotrygon motoro )

The genus Potamotrygon belongs to the family of freshwater stingrays ( Potamotrygonidae ). The 20 species are found exclusively in South American rivers such as the Amazon or the Río Paraná.

Features

Potamotrygon species have medium strong tails, which remain mostly shorter than the body plate. The well-developed spines sit a piece of the tail removed and have longitudinal grooves, is passed over the venom from glands at the base. The spikes are copied regularly, up to four can coexist. Dorsal and caudal fin missing, but the tail has behind the spines on the top and bottom membrane-like skin flap with rudimentary rays on. The eyes are of medium size.

Size and weight are less pronounced among them, Potamotrygon brachyura is almost a meter long and weighs approximately 200 kg, although Potamotrygon motoro is also up to a meter long, but only weighs about 15 kg, and Potamotrygon ocellata is only 20 inches long.

At various species of the genus has been demonstrated that freshwater stingrays have social learning and water can also be used as a "tool " to solve problems.
