POU domain

The POU family is a group of transcription factors with a highly conserved homeodomain.

In the human genome 15 POU genes were found. The genome of the model organism Drosophila and Caenorhabditis elegans, in contrast, has only five and four POU genes. Nevertheless, these transcription factors regulate a variety of biological processes. This is possible by a wide range of interactions with other transcriptional or cofactors.
