PowerPC 7xx

G3 is the name for the 3rd generation of the PowerPC processor family. It was - like its predecessors, the second generation processors (PowerPC 603 and 604) - developed jointly by Apple, IBM and Motorola.

G3 is also the colloquial name for the Power Macintosh G3 computer from Apple.

One against radiation -resistant variation of this processor ( RAD750 ) serves as the main processor of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter probe, and has long been one of the most powerful processors operating outside the Earth or its orbit.

Technology

The G2 processors had the disadvantage that they can very based on the scientific early, sometimes even experimental processor PowerPC 601, which was designed for a different environment with different background and lack of experience. However, the G3 processors have been optimized for use as CPUs for workstations; So for the Power Macintosh series.
