Praz-sur-Arly

Praz -sur -Arly is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Praz -sur -Arly lies at 1,036 m above sea level. M., southwest of Megeve, about 52 km southeast of the city of Geneva (air line). The village is located at the top Arly in a wide valley floor in the Savoy Alps, between the Chaîne des Aravis in the northwest and the chain of Mont Joly in the southeast.

The area of ​​22.64 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Savoy Alps. The main settlement area is located in the open valley floor of Megève, which is oriented from southwest to northeast and is drained by the Arly for Isère. The valley floor is at Praz -sur -Arly about 1 km wide. On both sides of the valley floor, the slopes are broken by short erosion valleys. To the north the municipality area extends over wooded slopes up to the alpine meadows of Tête du Torraz (1931 m above sea level. M. ) and Christomet (1853 m above sea level. M. ). In the south, the area stretches along the Ruisseau des Varins and the Ruisseau de Cassio Mont de vores ( 2067 m above sea level. To Praz -sur -Arly include the hamlet of La Tonnaz ( 1160 m above sea level. M. ) on the northern slope of the valley of the Arly and various holiday villages and farmsteads. Neighboring communities of Praz -sur -Arly are Giettaz in the north, Megève in the east, Hauteluce in the south and Notre -Dame-de -Bellecombe and Flumet in the West.

History

The oldest settlement in the area of Praz -sur- Arly La Tonnaz, which was already mentioned in 1375 under the name Thona. Only later developed on Road over the pass from Megeve to Praz, formerly written Pratz. Until 1869 Praz belonged politically to the municipality of Megève, only then it was raised to the independent community, which initially was called Praz -de- Megève. By decree, the town was renamed in 1907 in Praz- sur -Arly, in order to emphasize the independence from Megève better.

Attractions

The village church of Praz -sur -Arly was built in 1881 in neo-Gothic style in 1950 and completely restored until 1955. The hamlet of La Tonnaz is characterized by a group of traditional farmhouses and a furnace built in the 17th century.

Population

With 1319 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Praz -sur -Arly one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Since the early 1960s, a substantial population increase was recorded thanks to the attractive residential area. Near the main road and on the slopes of various housing estates were built.

Economy and infrastructure

Praz -sur -Arly was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Today there are various operations of small businesses. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work. In recent decades, Praz -sur -Arly has developed due to its proximity to Megève an important tourist resort. The community is specialized in both the summer tourism as well as on winter tourism ( several mountain railways and ski lifts).

The place is a good infrastructure. It lies on the main road N212 that runs from Sallanches via Megeve to Albertville. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of around 20 km.
