Predrag Matvejević

Predrag Matvejević (* 1932 in Mostar, Bosnia - Herzegovina) is a Croatian writer and literary scholar Croatian- Ukrainian origin, who lived in France and Italy, and published and has returned to Croatia. He possesses the Croatian and Italian citizenship.

Life

Predrag Matvejević was born in 1932 the son of a Ukrainian father and a Croatian mother Herzegovina Mostar. In the 1960s, he studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. Following his graduation in 1967, he taught there for years as a professor of comparative literature. International attention to the critical intellectuals since the 70s, with his open letters in which he lobbied for persecuted dissidents in the socialist countries. Since 1994 Matvejević lives in Rome, where he taught Slavic studies at La Sapienza University. As an author he has received numerous awards. Matvejević is vice - president of the International PEN Club.
