President of the Republic of China

The President of the Republic of China (Chinese中华民国 总统/中华民国 总统, Pinyin Zhōnghuá Mínguó Zǒngtǒng, W.-G. Chung -Hwa Kuo Ming - Tsung T'ung ) is head of state and commander in chief of the armed forces of the Republic of China, which controlled territory since the loss of mainland China in 1949 at Taiwan and several smaller islands, including Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu, limited. Informally, the President of the Republic of China (Chinese台湾 总统, Pinyin Táiwān Zǒngtǒng ) is therefore also known as " President of Taiwan " means.

The office of president was established under the Constitution of 1947 in 1948. First, the president was elected by the National Assembly. Since 1996, he is elected for four years by a majority election by a simple majority principle directly by the people. The term of office is limited to two terms, eight years.
