President of Vietnam

The President of Vietnam is the formal head of state of Vietnam, although its functions to a large extent representative nature. The President is responsible for appointing the Prime Minister, where he receives a recommendation of the National Assembly and the candidate can then select according to his free decision. The President is also the supreme commander of the Vietnamese People's Army and Chairman of the National Defence and Security Council.

The president is elected by the National Assembly for a term of five years.

The president was introduced at the founding of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1976. From 4 July 1981 to 22 September 1992 was named Chairman of the Office of the State Council. By 1976, Vietnam was divided into North and South. Thus, both parts had their own head of state.
