President (tree)

The President is probably the most massive and the second largest (living according to the General Sherman Tree tree in the world. He is a giant sequoia ( Sequoiadendron giganteum) and is at about 2100 m above sea level in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park in the U.S. state of California. The tree is at least 3200 years old and was in the early twenties of the last century in the name of the President ( " President " ) baptized. Like many other redwoods is also " the President " in the National Park under strict protection.

Dimensions

As part of the long-term monitoring project Redwoods and Climate Change Initiative of the tree was measured in detail.

The President reached a trunk height of 75 m, of which the uppermost 12 m are dead after a lightning strike about 1000 years ago. The trunk diameter at the bottom is 8 m. The total mass of the tree is estimated today at about 1540 m³ of wood and bark. Although the tree reached its present height already about 1000 years ago, but its timber volume continues to grow. The trunk diameter increases further, and the crown is always cantilevered. The four main branches branches in about 37 m height from the tribe, are up to 18 m long and have a diameter of 1.5 to 2 m.

Overall, the tree currently carries 534 branches with about 2 billion needles. For reproduction, the tree produces 82000 pin with a total of about 16.4 million seeds.
