Prieska

Province

Prieska is a town in the municipality Siyathemba, Pixley Ka Seme District, Northern Cape Province in South Africa. Named after the city is Koranna - word for ' place of the lost goat ' ( Prieschap ). 2011 Prieska had 14,246 inhabitants.

History

Located at the foot of Doringberges city was founded in 1882 and received the city status in 1892. They will spread along the southern bank of the Orange.

Through the South African astronomer Cyril V. Jackson, 1935, the asteroid ( 1359 ) Prieska was named after the city.

Economy

Prieska is a center of agriculture; also there are large amounts of precious stones, which dominates the tiger's eye. Here, the region around Prieska world's largest supplier.

Previously Prieska was also known for its mining industry. Larger copper and zinc deposits were discovered in 1968 and the " Prieska Copper Mine " from the Anglovaal Mining Ltd.. founded. She became one of the main mining locations for these ores in the Northern Cape. Copper was the more valuable product, but zinc was promoted greater quantity. The mine was closed in 1996 because she was always less profitable over the years.

Until the late 1960s, asbestos was mined in the vicinity of Prieska on a large scale. The resulting environmental damage and an increased risk of disease can be measured today.
