primus inter pares

A primus inter pares ( Latin for " first among equals ", female prima inter pares ) is a member of a group that holds the same rights as everyone else, but still enjoys an elevated position of honor. This position has the most representative character and is not associated with any privileges. In science, outstanding achievers in this way referred to without prior position. The decisive factor is their particular reputation and fewer titles or offices.

History

The term primus inter pares was introduced under Emperor Augustus, to describe his position in the Roman state structure (see also Principate ). Augustus wanted to emphasize with this name its subordination to the republican institutions; de facto, however, he was absolute ruler.
