Prince Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia

August Ferdinand of Prussia ( * May 23, 1730 in the City Palace in Berlin, † May 2, 1813 in Berlin) was a Prussian prince, an officer in the Prussian army, last general of infantry and Mr. Master of the Order of St. John.

Life

Ferdinand was the youngest son of King Frederick William I of Prussia (1688-1740) from his marriage to Sophie Dorothea (1687-1757), daughter of King George I of Great Britain and thus a younger brother of Frederick the Great. Even as a five year old was Ferdinand member of the Infantry Regiment " Crown Prince ". In 1740 his brother appointed him head of the infantry regiment No. 34

In 1756 he became major general and accompanied the king in October to Saxony and Bohemia in 1757 and took again the campaign in Bohemia and Silesia, where he mitfocht at Breslau and Marktleuthen. In 1758 he was forced due to increasing ill-health to leave the army as general of infantry.

On September 12, 1763 Ferdinand was elected Lord Master of the Bailiwick of Brandenburg of the Order of St. John. This position he held until resolution of the Bailiwick in 1811., When Frederick William III. on May 23, 1812 founded the Prussian Order of St. John, he appointed Ferdinand to his Lord Master. In addition, Ferdinand was like all Prince of Hohenzollern Knight of the Black Eagle.

Ferdinand 's namesake, founded in 1871 Ferdinand of Prussia Foundation.

In memory of posterity but he remained through the construction of his castle Bellevue in Berlin's Tiergarten.

Ferdinand married on 27 September 1755, the Princess Louise ( 1738-1820 ), daughter of Margrave Frederick William of Brandenburg- Schwedt, with whom he had the following children:
