Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine

Karl Wilhelm Ludwig of Hesse and by Rhine ( born April 23 1809 in Darmstadt, † March 20, 1877 in Darmstadt ) was a Prince of Hesse and by Rhine and General.

Life

Charles was the second son of Grand Duke Ludwig II of Hesse and by Rhine from his marriage to Princess Wilhelmine of Baden (1788-1836), daughter of the Hereditary Prince Karl Ludwig of Baden. He was raised along with his older brother Louis and took with this also extended educational trips through Europe.

Karl married on 22 October 1836 in Berlin Princess Elisabeth of Prussia ( 1815-1885 ), a niece of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. of Prussia and sister of the future Queen Marie of Bavaria.

Karl was Grand Ducal Hessian Infantry General and owner of the Grand Ducal 4th Infantry Regiment.

His residence was the palace Prince Charles ( Wilhelminenstraße 34) in Darmstadt, which is today ( after several extensions and alterations ) used by the German Pension Fund.

Policy

Due to the constitution of the Grand Duchy of Hesse Prince Charles was from 1834 until the election law reform as a result of the March Revolution in 1849 member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. After the victory of reaction he was from 1856 to 1877 again a member of the first chamber.
