Princess Caroline Reuss of Greiz

Caroline Elisabeth Ida Reuss to Greiz ( born July 13, 1884 in Greiz, † January 17, 1905 in Weimar ) was a princess Reuss Greiz and by marriage Grand Duchess of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach.

Life

Princess Caroline was a daughter of Prince Heinrich XXII. Reuss to Greiz (1846-1902) from his marriage with Ida (1852-1891), daughter of Prince Adolf I of Schaumburg -Lippe.

Caroline married on 30 April 1903 in Biickeburg Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach ( 1876-1923 ). At the time of the wedding Caroline had been an orphan and her brother insane, which is why the wedding was organized by the relatives in Biickeburg. At the wedding in addition to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Emperor Wilhelm II was present.

Caroline had resisted this marriage project, probably she was before as her two older sisters had already been romantically involved with a man beneath her. Caroline died before the age of 20 just two years after the wedding - officially a severe pneumonia. Various sources assume, however, that the Grand Duchess has taken his own life. Caroline was buried as the last member of the House of Saxe -Weimar in Weimar Fürstengruft.

Named after the Grand Duchess are the Caroline Home in Jena, the tower on the Kötsch Caroline, Caroline Promenade in Weimar and Caroline Bridge in Eisenach.
