Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg (1826–1896)

Elisabeth Pauline Alexandrine of Saxe- Altenburg ( born March 26, 1826 in Hildburghausen, † February 2nd 1896 in Oldenburg) was a princess of Saxe- Altenburg and by marriage Grand Duchess of Oldenburg.

Life

Elizabeth was the third of four surviving daughters of Duke Joseph of Saxe- Altenburg (1789-1868) from his marriage to Amalie (1799-1848), daughter of Duke Louis of Württemberg. Together with her sisters Marie, Therese Alexandra and she was trained by Carl Ludwig Nietzsche.

Elizabeth married on 10 February 1852 in Hildburghausen later to become the Grand Duke Peter II of Oldenburg ( 1827-1900 ), who succeeded his father Paul Friedrich August on 27 February 1853 in the government. On the occasion of the wedding of paid Paul Friedrich August 3000 Taler in a trust for charitable purposes, which was called at his request Elisabeth Foundation. Funds from this foundation incorporated later to the construction of the Elizabeth Children's Hospital, which was opened in 1872 with 40 beds. Also named after Elisabeth was founded for the 1889 Oldenburgische Deaconess House, they also supported as patroness.

The Moor settlement colony - Hunte- Ems Canal was named in 1880 in honor of the Grand Duchess Elisabethfehn. 1885 in Birkenfeld / Nahe, in Oldenburg principality of Birkenfeld, built hospital was named in her honor Elizabeth Hospital. From the hospital was commissioned in 1966 produced the Elizabeth Foundation.

Progeny

From her marriage to Peter Elizabeth had two sons:
