Princess Marie of Hesse-Kassel
Marie Wilhelmine Friederike Princess of Hesse -Cassel ( born January 21, 1796 in Hanau, † December 30, 1880 in Neustrelitz ) was Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg -Strelitz.
Family
She was the daughter of Landgrave Friedrich III. of Hesse- Kassel and Rumpenheim (1747-1837) and the Caroline Polyxena of Nassau- Usingen ( 1762-1823 ).
Marie married on August 12, 1817 Grand Duke George of Mecklenburg -Strelitz ( 1779-1860 ), son of Grand Duke Karl II of Mecklenburg- Strelitz ( 1741-1816 ) and Princess Friederike of Hesse- Darmstadt ( 1752-1782 ).
Progeny
From this marriage four children were born:
- Luise (1818-1842)
- Friedrich Wilhelm (1819-1904), Grand Duke of Mecklenburg -Strelitz
- Karoline Charlotte Marianne (1821-1876)
- Georg (1824-1876)
Painting
Grand Duchess Marie was a gifted painter. She created especially copies of famous paintings by old masters. Of these, the altarpiece in St. Lawrence ( Schönberg) and in the town church Neustrelitz ( Cross after Raphael, 1856) are obtained. Your Dürer copy of Christ on the cross, which was since 1868 the altarpiece of St. John Church on Castle Island ( Mirow ), burned 1945.
