Pellona castelnaeana

The Beilbauchheringe ( Pristigasteridae ) live in tropical coastal regions of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, four species in fresh waters of South America and Southeast Asia. There are schooling fish.

Features

The fish are 3.6 to 80 inches long, most species remain below 25 centimeters. My most striking difference to other herring -like is their long anal fin, which is supported 30-92 fin rays. Some species lack the pelvic fins The mouth is usually upper constant, otherwise terminal.
