Probal Dasgupta

Probal Dasgupta ( born September 19, 1953 in Calcutta, West Bengal ) is an Indian linguist. From 2007 to 2013 he was chairman of the Universal Esperanto Association.

Science

Dasgupta received his doctorate at the City University of New York on the generative syntax of his mother tongue, of Bengal. Since 1989 he has been Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Hyderabad. Since 2006 he runs lexical studies at the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata.

Since 2004 he is honorary member of the Linguistics Society of the United States.

Esperanto

Dasgupta has already inter alia, as 17- year-old with Kálmán Kalocsay correspondence on the translation of the works of Tagore. According to the World Congress in 1977, he was three weeks volunteers at the main office of the Universal Esperanto Association in Rotterdam and has subsequently represented the Federation at the United Nations. From 2007 to 2013 Dasgupta was chairman of the Federation.

He is a member of the Academy of Esperanto and since 2001 its vice president since 1983.
