The makushita Division (Japanese幕 下) is the third highest of the six classes of Japanese sumo. The name literally means " under the curtain ", and explained by the fact that the makushita earlier formed the second division and was located directly under the Makuuchi division. Their relatives were separated by curtains from the other wrestlers. The makushita Division always belong to 120 fighters, which are divided into eastern and western group.

The makushita is viewed as a springboard into the sekitori ranks and is accordingly characterized by fierce competition for promotion to juryo Division. It can either be achieved by regular battles against members of this league in the context of tournaments or by a 7-0 kachi- koshi: A fighter who is ranked among the top 30 of the division, this increases automatically. A fighter who is ranked lower, rises by such a tournament victory on the top 30, so that a two tournaments undefeated rikishi can change in each case in juryo.

It is often successful amateur wrestlers, granted example, from the high school sports, the career change to makushita Division. You will receive the rank of makushita Tsukedashi, which is currently between the 15th and 16th place in the division.

From the makushita division rikishi may perform the cleansing ritual with salt. This is removed from a small bowl salt that is scattered in most cases on the ring.
