Proflavine is an aromatic heterocyclic compound. At room temperature it exists as a brown - green powder. The structure is based on a proflavine, acridine skeleton. Sold as proflavine hemisulfate and or chloride is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant.

Properties

The melting point of proflavine is located at 285 ° C. It is readily soluble in water, as in aqueous solution, the heterocyclic nitrogen atom is protonated. Thus, the proflavine is present ionic. It shows yellow fluorescence in aqueous solution. The absorption maximum of proflavine is in aqueous solution and at a pH value of 7 at 450 nm

Introduced into the organism acts as proflavine intercalator in the DNA, and is therefore potentially mutagenic.
