ProFTPD

ProFTPD (abbreviation for Pro FTP Daemon ) is a free FTP server that runs on Unix systems and Windows with Cygwin. He is one of the FTP servers on Unix operating systems most commonly used.

History

The idea for the FTP server came the developers due to the high diffusion of wu- ftpd, but which had little features. These incorporate later the programmers seemed too inefficient, whereupon they started their own project - the ProFTPD.

Configuration

The ProFTPD is versatile in the file / etc / proftpd / proftpd.conf ( in previous systems such as Ubuntu 6.10 / etc / proftd.conf ) configurable and is similar in configuration to the Web server Apache. Among other things, virtual servers can be created and managed. The server can be used as "stand alone" or be started by inetd. IPv6 support is also available. A modular design allows SSL / TLS encryption, or extensions such as LDAP or SQL.

GUI / Web interface (selection)

The operation of the ProFTPD program, as most server programs on Unix / Linux, from the command line. However, there are a range of additional programs, which provide a graphical user interface ( GUI) for ProFTPD. The purpose of such graphical user interfaces is to make the configuration and operation of the server and in particular the monitoring of what is happening on the server more convenient and easier to read. A selection of existing GUIs for ProFTPD is:

  • Gadmin - ProFTPD, a GTK frontend for GNOME and KDE, as part of the GUI collection gadmintools. However gadmin - ProFTPD is not mandatory installed on the machine running the ProFTPD, but can also remotely control remote server via SSH.
  • ProFTPD Admin
  • ProFTPD PHP / MySQL administrations tool
  • ProFTPD administrator

Note: The use of a GUI closes the parallel operation of the server from the command line is not sufficient, also also multiple GUIs can be operated in parallel.
