Properzia de' Rossi

Properzia de ' Rossi ( * around 1490 in Bologna, † February 24, 1530 in Bologna) was a sculptor of the Italian Renaissance.

Properzia de ' Rossi was a student of the Bolognese engraver Marcantonio Raimondi.

She was known for her complex and small-scale sculptures from the kernels of stone fruit, such as apricots, peaches and cherries. The theme of this small " friezes " was mostly religious in nature. Two of these delicate process nuclei have been preserved in the Museo degli Argenti and the Palazzo Pitti in Florence to see. They are depicted in the coat of arms of the Grassi family in the Museo Civico Medievale Bologna.

About thirty years old, Properzia de ' Rossi was given the opportunity to work on a larger scale. Through their careful portrait busts in marble they could obtain public contracts, including the high altar of Santa Maria del Baraccano in Bologna. The west facade of the Basilica of San Petronio was designed by her, including one of her most famous bas-reliefs, Joseph and Potiphar's wife ( 1525-26 ).
